Are you obsessed with money?

Posted on 23. Jun, 2006 by in Business, Entrepreneurship

It all started about a year ago. I took some Nike Anti-Racism bands in to school to see if I could get a decent return out of them. At the end of the day, my blazer weighed about 10 kilos more due to all the cash I had in it, and I realised that I had made an extremely healthy profit of 800% on each band. Not too bad for my first venture!

It was then that I realised that business was for me, and I began searching of new ways to make money, including eBay, Amazon and more recently blogging. Since then, people around me, including my family, have thought that I have become obsessed with money. This may be a justified argument from their point of view seeing as I do spend a lot of time on the internet, without having a full or part-time job! However I think this may be also a little unfair.

Entrepreneurs of course have a passion not just for earning money, but for the other important aspects of internet business, for example being in contact with others who share similar attributes and ideas. Also other non-entrepreneurs simply cannot grasp the fact that people like you and me gain a certain buzz out of being on the internet, and seeing the trickle of income come in after working hard on a business idea.

Money is not the only product from being web savvy and I think that people who do not share the same passions, stereotype entrepreneurs as being fuelled and motivated by money. For those of you who speak a bit of French, my French teacher even called me “Monsieur motive par l’argent” due to me doing a case study on the French economy.
Are you ever criticised for being obsessed with money?

People usually wrongly associate an entrepreneur with a greedy-money-hungry cold person that only cares about money, nothing else. This is usually not the case and people need to look further into ones character before they start to judge.

    Great post Adnan.

I totally agree with you David, hopefully we young entrepreneurs can change this image.

Thanks for your comments guys. I think that we can see that entrepreneurship is becoming more popular with younger people, however they choose to follow the entrepreneurial route due to promised financial rewards and well being.

I think that many misinterpret entrepreneurship as an easy route to a better future, however that simply is not the case. Hard work and devotion are needed as well as the apparent “lust for money” in order to succeed as an entrepreneur.

Why do people see entrepreneurs as money-obsessed anyway (when we see Richard Branson putting in such hard work to make his business succeed), I just can’t figure it out!!!

I don’t know why people see entrepreneurs as money-obsessed.

A lot of entrepreneurs are just people with great ideas and great ideas generally lead to money. Of course, some entrepreneurs strive for great ideas to make money.

I haven’t been critized with being obsessed with making money, but then my main blog topic doesn’t focus on being an entreprenur.

I think it is important look deeper into someones character as David Askaripour said. Hopefully, as Andreas Bard mentioned, young entrepreneurs can change this image.

I believe it is all about people’s perspective. One thing is sure, there is no way you will provide a service that you will not make money.

People seem to say you are obsessed with money when they expected you to offer your service FREE and you insisted on your charges. They will even go to the extent of telling you thousands of reasons why they believe you are too money-conscious.

Anyway, let us all just focus on meeting people’s needs.

Yes unfortunately. Today my father said I was obsessed with money and that I admire people just for having money. What he doesn’t understand is it is in my nature, part of my personality and drive. I motivate myself through money and although I concede this may be regarded as shallow, it works for me. I always wonder whether these people who dislike the rich are just doing so out of jealousy? I wonder whether their attitude would change if they had tons of money.

    Hmm.
