Case Study: Walamu

June 24th, 2006 · 7 Comments

I was browsing through the Mind Petals network today and I found out about a brilliant new idea dreamt up by Rohail Rizvi. As a student he used to find that he was constantly stressing over buying text books for his classes. I’m sure many of you have the same difficulties - even if you’re buying off eBay, there’s the worry of sending payment, leaving feedback and making sure that your item actually arrives!

As a result, Rohail is in the process of building Walamu: A site where all the students from the same university can advertise and sell on their text books to other students. According to Rohail’s Pre Launch Blog at www.walamu.com:

“Students will spend an average of $898 per year on textbooks. This represents almost 20 percent of the average tuition and fees for in-state students at public four-year colleges nationwide. In contrast, a 1997 UC survey found that students spent an average of $642 on textbooks in 1996-97.”

Entrepreneur Rizvi plans to have a simple interface, clean from the hustle and bustle you will find on Amazon, so that students can contact each other and find what they need quickly and efficiently. I’m sure that many will benefit out of this great service. I know that when I go to university I’ll be struggling to find and pay for all my text books. I hope they are all electronic by then!
To be notified immediately when Walamu is launched, just signup for updates on the site homepage. I would really like to see this site contest with the big dogs out there, so good luck Rohail!

If you thought this post was good, you haven't seen anything! Why not:

Neither can I. It’s always great to see a budding entrepreneur launch their site! I’m really interested to know how well the site is going to catch on. So keep us updated Rohail!

Great post Adnan, I think this website is a great idea. Who is going to design the interface and the PHP scripts though. If you need help just let me know. By the way, How old are you Adnan, seems like you know what you are doing as a blogger but i cant believe you are not in University yet. :)

    Thanks Mkhan,
The website is now live at Walamu.com. Im not sure exactly how Rohail is getting on but I think it is proving to be successful.

For the interface and PHP scripts he hired out some programmers from abroad I think. So are you a coder? I may need some help with some new projects that I have going? Do you do website design as well?

Lol Im 16 years old, and am still in “High School”. Anyway, please contact me or add me to your MSN at adnan_278 [at] hotmail (dot) com because I would love to talk to you more about what you do.
    Thanks mate!
