At What Time Can You Concentrate The Best?

Posted on 12. Aug, 2006 by in Me & My Life, Personal Development

ClockI wanted to know at what time, you as a reader/entrepreneur/blogger focus the best. Lately I have realised that I get the most productive work done at late times in the evening. For example, Im writing this post now at 22.15 GMT, which is one of the latest times I’ve ever posted.

Normally, I tell myself that I work best in the mornings. However, at this time I merely look at my stats, reply to emails, check my blogs and other sites that I subscribe to and browse the forums. As Rich Schrefen would say – writer of the Internet Business Manifesto – an entrepreneur should always be focusing on efficiency and productivity. Being productive can mean doing tasks that involve labour whether strenuous or not, but by being super-productive, you can produce systems, that will enable you in future projects to stream-line your work process.

So, to get back to the question, at what time can you concentrate the best?

For me it depends on what I’m doing more than anything. I find that I write best when I’m actually doing other things – for example nearly of my ideas for papers and websites have been scribbled down during lectures or meetings rather than when I’ve sat at a desk waiting for inspiration. On the other hand, when I’m actually writing up these ideas I find that I work best when I’m sitting at a quiet desk in my flat with few distractions (other than MSN/AIM etc.).

As for times, I probably work best in the morning, although if I got some music on and I’m just coding away then I can happily stay up late and produce good work.

I think i work best when i’m focused on what i want to do and how im gonig to execute this. I don’t actually think there is a specific time when i actually work better, but if there is i’m unaware of it. But then again i might be aware of it becuase, i work in the later hours of the evening becuase, i think after my distractions(my sites, msn, forums, reading your blog:)) etc then i am more productive due to the fact i’ve overcome those distractions so yeah coming to a conclusion i think i work better in the evening after all my distractions have gone away. But then again i could work and be productive in the daytime when i have the oppurtunity and there are no distractions.

So overall in conclusion, i don’t think its due to a specific time i think its down to being a focused on what you want to do, have a plan how to execute it and the main one have no distractions as you can work on the other 2 after the distractions :)

    Thanks for your replies guys!

Wow, I’ve never really stayed up past 11pm to be on the computer, let alone 3am. There must be few distractions at that time, so I suppose it must be good for you Saadh.

Paul – many people say that the morning is when you are most mentally active, but I beg to differ. Working at night can be just as easy, especially when typing. Obviously it’s a little harder to focus on creating new ideas at that time of the day! What is your MSN mate, I would love to talk to you on it (you could reply through the contact form!)

Finally Nick, I got the general gist of your comment! You’re also saying that the fewer distractions there are, the better. For me, the internet is a great distraction. I know many bloggers who go to cafés and such, and spend all the time there with no internet writing posts and doing productive tasks.

I think you’re all saying that it doesn’t really matter what time you work at – different people have different work schedules, and that distractions are not welcome! Thanks again guys for your insight

Haha is it considered morning now adnan? I decided to stay up all night as its the last weekend before school begins :) . Been working on some new marketing technique for the last 8 hours straight. I’d say night is definitely the best for me :)

Haha yeah well its into the afternoon now! Wow yo stayed up all night! I wish I could do that but my parents would get so annoyed at me. I know Im back to school on Tuesday – its gonna be so bad.

These holidays I’ve grown used to waking up and checking emails and stuff. Being at school I can’t do that kind of stuff (the webmasters and technicians spy on you!). But at least it gives me something to look forward to when I come back from school at 4.45pm.

Im going into 6th form now, so Im actually quite excited, but Im sure the novelty will wear off after the first few days! What year are you going into?

What sort of marketing technique were you working on and for which project? I would love to talk to you more about this actually as I need a decent strategy for GolfChum.com. If you’ve got MSN or Yahoo add me on adnan_278 [at] hotmail (dot) com. Thanks for your comment Saadh!

I get the most work done at night when it’s quiet. I have never been a morning person!
