The Economics Behind Selling Blog Advertising

First Google AdSense Payment Received

March 5th, 2007 · 17 Comments

This weekend marked a memorable landstone for me and my income earnings online. After spending a year blogging, I finally reached the $100 payout stage and received a Direct Deposit into my bank account. You can see the screenshot below (click on the thumbnail):

$100 Adsense Deposit

A few of you may be asking, how come it took so long to reach the barrier? Well, at first, traffic was very low (especially considering how I had a Blogger account), and this resulted in poor pageviews and a poor amount of clicks. $0.05-0.10 days were common, and most of the time I made nothing from my online efforts.

Then when my site reached its .com-ness, and it hit a 4 month old stage, I started to get money making opportunities from other areas. Advertisers such as TextLinkAds, Adbrite and ReviewMe started making more money for me than the notorious Adsense, so I thought it would be better to diversify my income. Its only in the past few months where my income alround has picked up, and each segment of my online earners have performed.

So how long till the next payment? Hopefully extremely soon, as I’m already a third of the way through until my next payout. Direct Debits are the dogs bits though, as I don’t even have to worry about cheque depositing!

Anyway, have any of you guys managed to crack open the $100 with Adsense? If so, how long did it take to reach the payout stage? Here’s to the next $100!

If you thought this post was good, you haven't seen anything! Why not:

Hi, I have reached many $100 points on my other blogs, I am now nearing the $2000 point. It has taken me about 18 months to get that far.

On the blog listed above however I haevn’t made much at all yet. But then I have been pretty lazy!

I made my first 100$ in the first month.I might be lucky, but since then I made more money. :)

Congrats Adnan, in a very crowded marketplace it must be satisfying to achieve some milestones.

I haven’t yet received a Google check and probably won’t for a very long time - my business blog is connected to my tailored shirt business… so that’s where the monetisation is, so to speak! The only place I have Adsense going is my old blogspot blog.

Dont get discouraged, it took me a good 12 months to make my first $100 running two blogs when they started out. It usually takes some time to build up a good clickage rate per day. Im about another $2 off of earning my second payment and that one will have only taken 5 months to get. On another note, I did get my first Text Link Ads check today :-)

    Hey Adnan

Most of the blogs on your blogroll are dead?

Congratulations! I just posted about receiving my own first payment and it’s a great feeling. I think it took about 5 months at my new blog to get to this point. I still have good days and bad days, but the general trend is upward…

    Congrats.

I took me a little over a year. But, that is mainly because it took about 8 months to start the right blog. After that it picked up relatively quickly. I got my first check at the end of December and since then have been getting one every two months. I’m hoping to break into the once a month very soon.

    Hello Adnan:

I made my first $100 on Adsense in just over a month. In fact, your post inspired me to write my own post on the subject!

    See the article here.

Thanks for the idea & CONGRATS!!

PS…how long do you think until Text Link Ads approves my account? My site is only 4 months old, but my traffic is already up to about 15,000 - 20,000 hits per month.

Adnan: I really enjoy your site! Would you also be interested in a link exchange?

Congrats!!! I’m still haven’t received my first AdSense payment but I haven’t really be pursuing it very much. Other sources (a.k.a. TextLinkAds). It’s amazing that some people make so much from online advertising.

Firstly - Im really sorry guys that I havn’t responded to my comments earlier. Let’s just say things have been hectic around here :)

Sundance, Mihai, Mat, Chris (well done on ur TLA check!), Ray, Mike, Matt and Matthew (phew), thanks so much for your kind words and for your encouragement. Its been you guys who have kept me going through this period, and I thank you for sticking with me at Blogtrepreneur.

@ Matthew Jabs: sorry I’ve stopped doing link exchanges due to the large amount of queries I’ve been getting asking for one! But if you really enjoy the content here then it would be great if you could still link out to me. As for the TLA question, it depends on other factors like Pagerank a little, Alexa, Technorati, RSS subscribers. Try emailing Patrick Gavin for some help at pgavin@textlinkads.com - he’s normally real friendly and helpful.

@ Mat Newton - actually, you’re right, quite a few of the blogs on my blogroll are dead and I will be cleaning up those that are today! Thanks for reminding me mate ;)

    Cheers again everyone!

    great one adnan,…

I’m still waiting for my check for jan earning to arrive….however as for feb earning I got less just a few dollars to be eligible for my 2nd check.. :(

anyhow progress in march was much better with expected earning to go beyond $100 for march alone…so next month I should be expecting a fatter check since it will a cummulative for feb and march earning…

as for TLA, i’m hoping to get my first check soon ;) not much….but good enough to cover up the monthly hosting cost..

thks adnan….most of your post inspired me.. ;)

Wow congrats Kevin - $100/month in Adsense sounds v.cool - well done on getting that far. Is that from the 1 site - or is it from a collection of sites. Would be really interesting to learn your tactics and story behind getting upto this stage.

Nice one on the TLA as well - for me they are by far my highest earner, and they deposit into my Paypal account every month - I know not as nice looking as a fat cheque!

Glad that this post inspired you - keep on rockin’!

Thanks for the advice Adnan. I will still link to you and I will also email Patrick. I’ll keep you updated.

Thanks again for the info…oh yeah…I also received your email, but I’ve just been really busy so I haven’t responded. I’m building a new home & just sold mine so things have been a little hectic.

    Adnan:

Great news! I followed your advice and emailed Patrick Gavin to ask for TLA approval on eJabs.

He replied a few days later & approved my site, so now it is ready to set up & begin thanks to your advice!

    Thank you very much!
