How Can You “Snakes on a Plane” Your Business?
Posted on 23. Jun, 2008 by Adam in Business
Having been reading Adam Gilbert’s blog for quite some time now, I always thought he would make an awesome guest post for Blogtrepreneur. Last night Adam sent me this article through, and he hasn’t failed to disappoint. Hope you enjoy reading this as much as I did.

The other night I happened to be flipping though the channels and stumbled on Snakes On A Plane. I had never seen it and who can resist hearing Samuel Jackson yell, “I have HAD it with these mothaf%$&*#g snakes on this motha%$%#*g plane!”
I never saw this movie, yet I immediately knew what it was going to be about. You know it’s going to be a thriller type movie that entails getting the mothaf*&^%ing snakes off the plane.
I knew what I was getting into. And that’s the idea.
Without anyone telling me anything they made a promise to me. It just so happens that the title was good enough to be able to do that.
When it comes to your business, usually you need more then your name (and tag line) to tell people what you do. You might have website copy or a pamphlet or a business card or all of the above.
In this day and age, sadly when a business keeps their promise it’s shocking. However, some people do expect a company to keep their promises. After all, why assume the worst?
But most people never say anything if they like something (because they expect a certain something – as they should). Think about it. You definitely are a customer of many places because they do something a certain way.
If they changed that certain something you might stop going. For example, when I used to go to the diner under my old building where I lived and I’d order my grilled chicken sandwich or turkey burger, every single time, my man Sammy would bring me like 10 pickles. He knew I loved pickles and I didn’t have to ask him for extra pickles.
Maybe it’s the way you joke around with your clients. Maybe it’s because your clients can relate to you with the stories you tell them. Maybe it’s because you treat them like family. Maybe it’s because you want the best for them…and they know it. Whatever it is.
Most people are too busy to say something nice though.
But if you believe in what you’re doing, and people are coming back and referring clients to you, don’t stop what you are doing!
It could be the smallest thing that people really enjoy…like free pickles. But the idea here is that I grew to expect those pickles.
The idea here is not revolutionary. It’s extremely simple.
Keep doing exactly what you do if people are coming back and referring customers to you. It could be the smallest thing that people love.
And the most important of all:
Keep your mothaf%$&*!g promises!

In this day and age, with countless other blogs out there, you would have to be unique and stand out of the crowd to attract readers. Why would I say, read X blog when its just a rehash of Y blog?
Anyway, great article but Snakes On A Plane, suc***d big time.

Keeping promises is also being credible. If you are credible enough you will keep loyal customers with you.

All I can say is that your article is far better than the film, you did well to avoid it.
Credibility is a big issue and you are only as good as your last job as the saying goes. Online business must be even harder, how do you add those little touches for the virtual customer?

@Mushfiq, web has to be unique, business has to be unique and everything should be unique too if you want to keep up in the competition.
There was competition and there always will be!

Adam,
Great post !
IMO, keeping promises not only good for your rep, but also for your health! Keeping promises keep you focus on what is right to do, and doing the right thing brings you positive ‘energy’ days in and days out :)
Cheers!

Great post. I run a couple of companies and it can certainly be a stretch sometimes especially when times are tough to hold the line of credible when there are so many companies line balling it.
Yet what a way to establish great relationships not just transactions the true test of a business!

A fantastic post! Being British I have a thing for Kebab’s after a night out with my friends, and after almost seven years there is only one place I will go for that kind of food, even though I know Doner Kebab’s are bad for me. The reason for this is friendliness and that they provide everything I ask for at a low price. The other week I asked them why they didn’t provide other things for customers, like pizza and now they’re selling and delivering loads; an accomplishment considering the family business is running next door to a less-successful Pizza Hut.
That being said, sticking to your promises is probably the best thing you can do. It not only keeps your credibility with others, it keeps credibility and confidence in your own ability.
Thanks for the great post!

Yeah, I knew going in that Snakes on a Plane was going to be horrible. Don’t make your business appear that way :)

@ Mike – I love the Kebab analogy, although I think it is safe to say that a lot more of us Brits head off for a Ruby Murray after a night out.

not sure if being like snakes on a plane is such a good idea- a lot of hype that didn’t live it to it’s PR compaign. in other words, it bombed. instead, be real, honest and accurate with your readers!

Seriously, if you haven’t been bitten by a snake, you are not afraid of it..By the way, the best way to know if you are successful or not in your business is through recommendation. When people recommend you, you are good..

@ Eva – yes – Blogtrepreneur unfortunately has been pretty inactive for a bit, which is quite sad. I’ve just had loads come up in my offline life which means I can’t dedicate as much time as I would like to the site – and thus, things have really stagnated.
If you guys keep hanging in there though, hopefully I can rewake this site from amongst the dead and really bring it back up to scratch.
Keep watching this space!…
