Some of the biggest Domain Sales ever!
The ultimate return on any investment has got to be in the form of an epic domain sale. Depending on when and where you buy your domain name, you will pay as little as $3.99 for the rights to register your site with a unique .com (or .net, .org). But what happens if someone else decides that they really, really, REALLY want the name you’ve already chosen? One word: JACKPOT.
Here is a list of some of the biggest domain sales in the history of the internet. It shows why so many people make a serious hobby out of buying and selling domain names:
Sex.com - $14 million
business.com - $7.5 million
beer.com - $7 million
casino.com - $ 5.5 million
loans.com - $3 million
autos.com - $2.2 million
coupons.com - $2.2 million
Bingo.com - $1.1 million
WallStreet.com - $1.03 million
men.com - $1.32 million
AsSeenOnTV.com - $5 million
ForSaleByOwner.com - $835,000
beauty.com - $800,000
cinema.com - $700,000
taxes.com - $700,000
military.com - $500,000
BlackJack.com - $460,000
Art.com - $450,000
vote.com - $250,000
Bingo.com - $200,000
Thin.com - $200,000
Engineering.org - $198,365
Architecture.com - $190,000
Beef.com - $150,000
Athlete.com $122,000
GarageSales.com - $110,000
Meetpeople.com - $100,000
Cleaning.com - $100,000
happybirthday.com - $55,000
It is easy to see why big companies would pay for these domains and what kinds of sites they may be used for. But here are some other high-sellers that make you wonder just what they are going to be used for:
Tom.com - $2.5 million (What? No Jerry.com?)
Rock.com - $1 million (Because computers and rocks just make sense)
Sky.com - $1 million (A site for people who refuse to stay grounded)
If.com - $1 million (Why not?)
me.com - $460,000 (You know what it’s all about…)
Alice.com $250,000 (For fans of the television show)
OD.com $220,000 (When you’ve been on the internet for 48 hours straight)
Fruits.com - $160,000 (A place for apples and oranges to hook up without being judged)
Modern.com $160,000 (Because ancient.com is so 1990)
444.com $178,888.89 (What’s this for?)
question.com $175,000 (For inquiring minds)
Rainbow.com $170,000 (Where’s potofgold.com?)
MR.com - $125,000 (That’s MR.com to you, pal!)
Push.com - $125,000 (It automatically redirects to shove.com)
Glory.com - $115,000 (A sister site to CarpeDiem.com)
And last but not least…
Fish.com - $1,020,000 (I wonder how much Fish.net was?)
While it’s true, most domain names don’t re-sell for nearly this much, you can still earn a good profit by regularly buying and selling domains. To learn more about the basics of domain sales, check out our previous post on the topic: http://www.blogtrepreneur.com/2007/12/22/buy-and-sell-domains/

Wow! Great post. Those are some impressive numbers!
Pretty interesting, and agood blogging lesson here. I had seen the same or avery similar list a week or so ago, I even have a draft post started on it, but I couldn’t figure out what to say that the original post didn’t say.
Your take was entertaining and informative. I really did laugh at the fish.net observation. usually the .com is _always_ the way to go but here and there a .net makes more sense
Fish.com seems to be used effectively selling auarium supplies … I think there’s some much higher ticlet items that it could be monetized for, fish.net is hust parked with ads … a lot more “fishy” business is still possible out there.
I hope that the companies that purchased these domains return a profit on them because they are spending a lot of money to acquire them
Interesting post.
I know a lof people who make a living out of this.
But they are not based on the “jackpot domains”.
Instead they purchase the $5 domains and sell them for $50 and they do this at bulk levels too.
So it is a viable business model.
Personally, I’ve sold 2 of my unused domains in the past for $5,000.
It’s nice work if you can get it!

Domain industry is really big and has proven to be profitable for many, so there is no big surprise why so many people are spending a lot of money on domain purchases. Great names will always will be quite valuable, and their values seem to continue to grow.
Some very high figures here but some I believe went for lower than they should of such as blackjack.com and bingo.com although I would be incredibly happy with what they received.
Just reading out some of these to my girlfriend. She cannot comprehend at all, in any way, why these prices are so high.
I just bought a great key phrase domain for my business for $400 and she was moaning about the price!!
i want to know how to enter in this domain business i want to buy domains how should i do so send an mail on my address
