The Google Workout

With Google algorithms changing almost daily, it seems there is now a huge question mark over whether page rank really matters.

If you have a high page rank site with very little traffic – the actual value of this is significantly less than that of a site with high traffic and low page rank. The priority for most businesses these days is to climb to the first page of Google for their keyword search phrase – but for some reason or another, the majority of the time you can find a really low page rank site in the top 10 listings.

So, how are they doing it?

The confusion comes when we automatically assume that the two go hand-in-hand. The only honest answer that anyone should be talking about is that Google keeps their algorithms so close to their chest, and changes them so often, that we really don’t know. How is it that a site which is not even in the first 10 pages can jump to page 1 overnight?

With over 150,000,000 sites on the web trying to get to the top, it can often feel like you’re on a treadmill, and just like a regular workout, there are certain things you need to be doing on a daily basis – as part of your Google Regime.

Here is what your Google Workout should look like:

1) Backlink Marketing – 45 minutes

Take an article you have written and market it via directories, websites, blog’s & Ezines. Remember to create multiple variations of your article to avoid the duplicate content issue.

2) Traffic Generation – 45 minutes

Social media is great for this exercise – comments and getting involved with targeted online communities are great ways to get people onto your site. Offering advice in forums, contributing to social media networks and commenting on high page rank blogs are essential – but don’t confuse traffic generation with Backlinks. When you’re working on generating traffic, you should be mingling with likeminded people and only working on sites which are specific to your niche.

3) Updating Your Content – 30 minutes

Write something new on your site daily, update a web page, put in a blog post – anything to create change. If you want Google to take an interest in your website then you need to have interesting content – and above all, it needs to be unique.

4) Reciprocal Links – 30 minutes

Every day try to find a website or blog to exchange links with. Make sure that the partner site has similar traffic to your own site. So for example, if your business is selling computers, start looking for a site selling computer accessories.

  1. I’d say you also need to do a 15 minute cool down by analyzing your Analytics from the day before and planning how to use that data wisely for the coming week.

    This is one of those ideas that are surprising. There are so many people who do have areglar workout regime, and so many that spend thier time advocaring a regular workout schedule that it is strange no one ever laid it out this way before. Good thinking.

    Let me also add this about page rank. Google has chnaged the rules so often and make so many PR chnages for reasons we just don’t understand that it is just not worth the time so many people put into worrying about it. I have one blog that a year ago was essentially dead. It rarely got even 10 visitors a day … but it was as high as a PR4 at one time.

    I started looking at what the very small number of vistors were looking for … using G-A and internal server search data, and just started writing content that matched up with the searches. The site fell to a PR1, but I now get close to 200 unique visitors per day … still rising … and the site makes a few dollars a day just from AdSense. PR seems to make virtually no difference … so knock yoursekves out, Google algorithm guys, the rest of us are busy building the Web ;-)

    it is great advise. I have been doing all of it, but the result are so slow. Maybe I am not being patient enough. How long does it take to see measurable results?

    With SEO I would always say that you need a good 8 months of labor to build a solid foundation. Sometimes results can appear quicker, but Google needs the time to index the links :-) hang in there!

  9. Google indexes my pages very quickly, my bigger problem right now is that its taking google forever to index blog directories and article directories with my links. Only the biggest ones like ezine index my articles right away, probably because all articles stay all day on high pr pages before theyre moved from there.
