Top Hits on Microsoft’s Bing

In order of importance, here are the top Bing trending topics of the year:

Search1. Michael Jackson
2. Twitter
3. Swine Flu
4. Stock Market
5. Farrah Fawcett
6. Patrick Swayze
7. Cash for Clunkers
8. Jon and Kate Gosselin
9. Billy Mays
10. Jaycee Dugard

No real surprises for the number one, sad news which caused number two pick, Twitter to crash when it broke. It’s not clear whether these results are for the entire year or are just relevant to the Bing search engine, which didn’t essentially arrive until June.

In social media terms, the fact that Twitter was so heavily researched is once again testament to its meteoric rise within our ranks. No mention of Facebook – does this mean that everyone knows and accepts this medium, but is increasingly interested in just what that little blue bird is all about?

It is very interesting to note that Twitter came ahead of swine flu. Of all the terms referenced above, one can imagine a certain element of urgency or panic related to searches for swine flu, as it focused the attention of everyone around the country when it was declared a pandemic. Microsoft has not released its methodology, but we assume that they have correlated billions of longtail search queries to extrapolate these results.

Will 2010 be the year of Twitter? With a much-anticipated commercial platform about to roll out and Bing’s integration of real-time Twitter results now on board, people may finally “get” the micro-blogging platform and move it on to their right arm.

By the way, the number one searched celebrity this year, believe it or not – Perez Hilton.

Are you surprised by this list of Top Hits?

  1. Cool, now I only need to become famous and everyone will follow me on twitter and I will be rich.

    ye right… haha

  2. John Paul says:

I’m pretty sure this is there over all top searched, since I don’t think swayze and farrah are still getting top lookups now..

But like always it’s all about twitter, we will see the future for twitter, they can’t get the site to work roght for 7 days str8, now they are making big changes?

I’m sure it will work like ass as ussual, then we will see how many people stick with twitter with all the down time and issues.

  3. James Rayers says:

I’m amazed at what a large chunk of the top searches are filled by people. Surely web users have more important things to search for?

  4. Essays says:

Thanks for the list, indeed Michael Jackson is on Top of every search engine. I was checking Google and it had millions of searches for him.

  5. I am very surprised that Twitter got more searches than swine flu. I wonder if that also groups h1n1 related searches together. With so many celebrities getting so many searches, that would probably be a good niche to target.

  6. New avatar of bing much liked by people. Twitter cleverly maintain its search pick as well in bing, Swine Flu search drastically introduced newly this year in search, stock market as usual rocking in search.

  7. Dape says:

I must live in another world if these are the topics of the year. Maybe I am wrong but most of these relate to some form of grief.

  8. Guildford says:

there are some name mentioned above i never heard of and these are the top searches on bing. someone above said rightly that we need to be in another world if these are the top searches.

  9. However, I’ve tried it out and it’s no different than other search engines. I got just as many nonsense results from bing as I did from other search engines.

  10. I would like to share my thought about Bing, I get so many UNWANTED results from Bing, even Yahoo is not that good. Google gives the best results.

  11. UAE Degree says:

Thanks for the list, indeed Michael Jackson is on Top of every search engine. but i was thinking about to Avatar, 2012. Amazing!

  12. I am planning on planting a couple cherry trees in my backyard. I live on the west coast. At Home Depot where I’m buying the trees from, they have tags that say “need pollination”. On an adjacent Rainier cherry tree, the tag says good pollinator. Does that mean I should get one Bing and one Rainier so they can pollinate?
Also, do “combination” cherry trees make sense in eliminating the pollination need?

  13. Kymm says:

i think that Bing is not as good as Google. Google would still index new websites faster than Bing. Microsoft would still need a lot of catching to do with GoogleBot.

  14. Kim Lautner says:

I use both Bing and Google search engine and i dont see much difference in their search results. I use google for searching hard to find academic topics and Bing for general search.

  15. Sushie says:

Wah, two year ago, not many people know what Twitter is, and today, it is became more known and powerful than Facebook! o_O
