Outstanding Search Engines that aren’t Google

Search EnginesSome of the very core utilities of the Internet are search engines. Whether it is for business or pleasure, people are using the Internet to seek out information at staggering rates. For example, on Google, 34,000 searches occur each and every second!  Google has become the default search engine in web browsers and mobile devices for many Internet users.

The problem is that Google may not always be the best search engine for your needs. If you find that Google simply isn’t getting the job done the way you would like for it to, you might want to give a different search engine a try. Here are some great alternatives to Google:

WolframAlpha Do you like to get nerdy with your searches? If you’re a fan of numbers and computations, then WolframAlpha just might be the search engine for you. When using this search engine, users are able to execute formulas, provide statistical data, and much more!

Searchtastic If you’re a Twitter user, chances are that you’re familiar with search.twitter.com in order to locate and/or discover new tweets. There are a couple limitations with this method:  It will only search seven days worth of history, and there is no easy way to export the discovered tweets easily while searching.  Searchtastic has solved both issues. A user can search for tweets from several months back rather than only one week. They can also export their results to Excel easily.  Searchtastic is a real gem…especially for marketers.

ClipBlast It’s pretty obvious that YouTube has become the king of Internet video as well as video searching.  The main issue with YouTube search is that it is limited to videos which have been uploaded to the site.  Although a lot of online videos call YouTube their home, there is a lot of content being posted on other services.  With ClipBlast, you can search for videos across numerous video sharing websites.  It displays the results as thumbnails on the results page.

Pipl Everyone has, at one time or another, Googled themselves, right?  Google isn’t really meant to provide you with person-focused results though.  This is where Pipl steps in. This search engine will blow you away! You may end up finding more than you even wanted to know about someone. Pipl draws from social profiles, business information, images, emails, and other information of this type. Go ahead – Pipl yourself. You might be amazed!

So, to reiterate, there isn’t anything wrong with Google.  It’s become the leading search engine because it’s a great search engine, and it gets better all the time.  But it’s not the only game in town, and sometimes another player will do the trick as well or better.  Which search engine is your favorite?

    Umm, isn’t Pipl kind of creepy? :P Talk about a very “stalker”-ish website. Searchtastic is great, since I have used Twitter search.

    @Printable: Yeah, that’s why we thought it would be a good post. They’re pretty cool, but not many people use a lot of them.

    Nice discussion so we would like to add my few points here.

    1. We use google because there is a google tool for me to check which keyword have good no of search count & i can optimize my website as per the keywords research but for other search engine there is not any free tool to check keywords count.

    2. I am ranking on 2nd position with few good keywords like

    “web marketing company” on Bing.com but as compare to google it is only giving me 10-15 daily visits which is very less.

    But yes if we are ranking on these search engines then its good to get something. These search engines are not good like google but today is a time people search other search engines as well if they don’t found any relevant results on google.

    This is a great list & we recommend users to optimize website for other search engines as well.

    First time I’ve heard of these other search engines, they all sound interesting. Will try to look into them. I’m still waiting to see which among the other search engines would destroy the Google monopoly when it comes to search.

    ClipBlast looks most interesting to me. I like to occasionally feature video clips on my blog.

    And I’m with Andrew — I’d like to see a strong competitor to Google.

    Wolfram Alpha and the others are great and I have used Wolfram, but people are very obstinate about changing search engines/browsers etc. I love Google Chrome but my wife and children will not switch from Firefox.

      I am one of those people you speak of!! ;)

      I simply cannot change from Safari and Google! – simplicity wins every time in my eyes and both Safari and Google as a combination, are the simplest tools ever!

      Safari really is brilliant, I was on the ‘dark side’ with IE for so so long and when I bought my mac I realised what I was missing – I’m so much more organized with my bookmarks now.

      Firefox has to be my least favorite…probably because of my on-going battle with that bloody browser when creating websites!!
