Philips Continues Their Livable Cities Initiative

Philips Livable CitiesLate last summer, we wrote a post introducing the Philips Livable Cities initiative. As Philips continues their push to create livable cities, they face new global challenges and are continually working on solutions.

One challenge that Sir Ken Robinson, a creativity expert, discusses in the video below is the fact that although the world population as a whole is growing rapidly, populations are growing at different rates in specific regions. This creates a large difference in the demographics within these regions – regions with a rapidly growing population will tend to have a lower average age, for instance. Creating livable cities then cannot be a “one-size-fits-all” approach but must take into consideration the unique needs of each population center.

Cities do have some commonalities though. In the next video, Katy Hartley, Director of the Philips Center for Health and Wellbeing, discusses the common big challenges facing cities, and how those can be addressed for the good of all.

Another ongoing challenge is how to make a city “livable.” Not everyone within a metropolitan area is going to agree on what livable means, so how do you go about creating a model that will be attractive to everyone? Our last video is a compilation of talks by the leading experts in this area, and they have some good answers about what makes any city livable.
