Great Post! You have some very convincing points. I feel that it is weird to have sound effects while opening a webpage. Whenever i come across a webpage which has sound effects i immediately close the website. Thus, a website should be one which is functional, easy to navigate and gives useful information.

I know it’s a dying breed but I’d like FLASH to be up on that list, and thank you for putting to bed the ‘flashy logos and icons’. I cannot believe how ‘cool’ that was to have a GIF just rotating around or doing something annoying!

Thanks for the powerful points you make here. Like Terri, I have issues with pop ups too. They are like advertising forced down our throats when they pop up while we’re still trying to read or view content on a website. They are intrusive;(

About a month ago, when I arrived home to find one on my doorstep. Followed by another identical one a couple of days later. Now, as for the last time I *used* a phone book, it’s been a while. I’m not even sure where the two we have are…

Can we add “video which plays automatically” as a sub-category of #3? I consider it worse because not only is it obnoxious, it also sucks bandwidth and can bog down the computer.

Pop-ups asking me to take a site survey when I’ve just arrived at the site for the first time ever aren’t just annoying and distracting, they’re pointless.

Finally, too many website designers have forgotten that not everyone who will visit the site has access to high speed internet. Until recently I lived in an area which had no reliable broadband options and there are more than a few sites out there which are completely unusable for anyone still stuck with dial-up access.

You hit every one of the most annoying features to avoid. My biggest issue is with those pop ups that come up as soon as you enter a web site, offering a ‘deal’ or a ‘sign up’… how are visitors to know if they want either until they get a look at the site? Clean and simple is the best way to go. Don’t waste people’s time or just plain annoy them. Much better chance they will join your community and possibly become a customer.

I came across a website last week that had the automatic sound come on…my volume was way up from a webinar and I nearly fell out of my chair. Auto generated music sucks big time in my opinion.
