Whilst it does depend on the market you are targeting, one thing of importance is the business owner. Some businesses get so focused on what they think will work for their market, they forget that it needs to work for the owner as well. By that I mean - if the owner is a fun, outgoing person, the name should reflect that, if they are a conservative person, it should reflect that as well.

Some good points, particularly on leaving room for growth. A lot of my clients ask me how to make a Business Name roll off the tongue - usually using "hard" sounds makes it more memorable (eg. Kinkos, FedEx). Also, I agree with your "Keep it Fresh" point, but every now and then, you really want to make the business sound small and homely (like Kate's Café), if you've done enough research on your target market beforehand, then you can tell what kind of name you should have - a "cool" name, or a "homely" name.

Great point on leaving room for growth. I'd imagine it could be fairly detrimental and confusing if your business was named one thing, but did another.
