Why you should invest in yourself to excel career

When you’ve been working the same job for a number of months or even years, there comes a time when you want something more. When you want to progress, show your boss that you’ve grown both as a person and an employee and of course, get paid more.

Stepping up onto the next rung of the career ladder isn’t easy. You might deserve that promotion and that pay rise, but there could be a number of other employees and fresh candidates that can prove that they deserve it more. It’s tough. With this in mind, we’ve collected 5 ways you can excel in your career, and hopefully land the job that you want and deserve.

Never stop learning

Cringeworthy typos, poorly reference sources, patchy emails, and horrendous copy and pasting. If you want to stand apart from your fellow colleagues for all the wrong reasons then this is a sure-fire way to do it. Get to grips with your spelling, grammar and clarity of your communications. Understand plagiarism and how to check that none of your work has been plagiarised. If you want your employer to invest in you then you have to start investing in yourself, by giving yourself the tools and knowledge you need to succeed.

Network

Networking is an important part of any business, and an employee that wants to make headway and rise through the ranks needs to start meeting the right people. This could mean introducing yourself to another department, getting to know how other areas of the company work. Ask your manager to help you establish connections with other parts of the company. Speak to someone in person rather than sending an email and make a conscious effort during company updates to make yourself known with some interesting and relevant queries. Spruce up your LinkedIn page and showcase yourself.

Look the part

You know what they say, dress for the job you want. It’s important to adhere to the company’s clothing guidelines here, but dressing in clothes that fit well, that compliment you, that are in good condition and reflect your professional nature are an absolute must.

Be organized

A desk that is overflowing with junk, old files, coffee-stained papers, and yesterday’s lunch just won’t do. Try to keep your workspace clean and clear. Not only does this show that you’re organized and ready for anything but also that you respect company property. Make full use of your calendar, know where you need to be and when and keep on top of your workload.

Always be polite

It’s true that manners cost nothing. But in business, they’re worth their weight in gold. Being polite is pretty obvious, however, when you’re having a bad day and want to throw in the towel, it’s difficult to keep a smile on your face. Regardless of the day, you’re having, always try to be respectful. Taking out your frustrations on other employees simply shows that you’re not mature enough for any kind of promotion.
