Tweaking The Site and Blogtreprelinking

Posted on 08. Aug, 2007 by in Internet, Wordpress

In the past few hours, I’ve been working with Connor (my site designer), to completely finish up my Entrepreneur Blog. There were still a few little bugs and glitches to sort out. Here’s what we’ve been doing:

  • Customising the comments – Every time you comment, the comment number will now be either green or blue, whilst my comments will have a red number with a blue background. Just a nice little, pretty touch!
  • Validating the code – Now my site is XHTML and CSS Valid – which just makes for tidier surfing and hopefully a little Search Engine love.
  • Fixing Internet Explorer bugs – I hate IE, but unfortunately quite a large number of people use it (if you are, switch to Firefox!) All IE7 bugs have been fixed but there are still a few IE6 issues. If anyone could help me getting rid of these annoying IE6 problems, help would be much appreciated!
  • Ads and Time Capsule – Now adverts and the Time Capsule are displayed on every single page of the website. So you get even more bang for your buck as an advertiser. The Time Capsule now features 1 popular post from the past which randomly generates each time you refresh the page – so dig into the Archives!

I’m so glad that we’ve finally finished – so a big thanks again to Connor for his awesome designing and programming skills.

Over the past few days, and even weeks, I’ve seen some great posts floating around the blogosphere that I just want to highlight now. These guys have been churning out the content non-stop – so give them a bit of love:

  • Ben from BinaryMoon is holding a competition whereby you can win a link on his PR7 site. I recently have been talking to Ben and discovered that he works for Miniclip too! And don’t we all need a bit of Pagerank at this time of the year.
  • Mark from 45n5 has been busy setting up a new Forum and writing posts like How To: Build A Youtube Ebay Amazon Mashup Affiliate Site In Under Ten Minutes so drop by, checkout the script and say Hi.
  • Leonid from Cashbulge wrote a mammoth of a post called 33 Useful Ways to Promote & Improve Your Blog, which contains a few gems.
  • Deron from RandomJabber – who as well as created the logo for my next site (more to come) – analysed why Social Networking Traffic sucks. StumbleUpon at the mo are my faves and I regularly get 100 to 200 uniques whenever I post a good article.
  • Daniel from DailyBlogTips posted up the Pro Blogger Test. I only scored 70% – what did you get?
  • Yaro’s putting together an awesome series on How To Launch A Membership Site. The first part on preeminence is already something which I’m putting into action for my next site.
  • Shoemoney answered my question:

“If you’re partnering with a programmer for a site or a project (like AuctionAds) – how do you come up with a figure for how much equity you can give them if you don’t want to pay them in cash for the job?”

    He replied:

The first time working with someone I would give them no equity and just give them a hourly rate. If you get some lazy ass then you just gave away something and they can sit on there ass and not do anything.

    Thanks for the advice buddy.

Congratulations guys for making it onto the list and keep writing amazing stuff.

Good to see you improving the blog everyday. I’ve begun to hate IE as well with its errors and incorrect display of one of my main websites as well. Good luck!

Hehe thanks Erik. Yeah IE is a real bummer, I don’t know why the whole world can’t use Firefox. It displays code properly lol.

Sadly its just ‘easy’ for people to use IE especially when they have XP / Vista

Glen – you’re right. And quite a lot of people don’t know that Firefox exists, especially those who only use the computer for emails and the like.

@ Deron – no probs buddy, thanks for writing such a great piece.

And @ Mark – no probs also. And thanks for the nice words, I’m glad the design is finally finished, the comments section looks especially nice IMO!

oh I love those comment numbers :) technicalities aside, I just love the way your site is looking with added color yet still simple….

I haven’t used IE for years now and I don’t even feel comfortable if I ever fire it up by mistake!

and those are some nice links, will be checking them out…

Hehe thanks Pearl. Yeah I really liked them too, although I have to say much of the inspiration comes from Chris Pearson from Pearsonified who made the Cutline theme which this site is based around!

Yeah same, I deleted all links and shortcuts to IE, just because it reminds me of popups and general ugliness.

Thanks for dropping by Pearl :)

this IS cutline .. I hadn’t noticed.. you’ve done quite a bit of modification to it … I will soon be changing my template too – don’t know much of programming so I’m always looking for something where all I have to do is add some plug ins – but still a bit different than the rest :)

Hehe, yeah I’m no use with programming either. This is a custom theme so I thought I might as well pay for something a little more flashy. The designer has completely changed it – Cutline is pretty flexible like that. Check themes.wordpress.net – so designs aren’t that shabby.

After shoemoney answer your question. So you are paying your designer hourly rate for this design?

Thanks Ray – hiring a custom designer is definitely something that I should have done earlier with hindsight. It really allows you to open up revenue streams.

No probs Leonid! And at Ken, Ive not got a designer yet
