Six Reasons Why Guest Blogging Will Take Your Small Business to the Next Level

Guest Blogging for Small Business

When I talk to small business owners about the benefits of blogging, I’m quite often met with resistance. Faced with mounting responsibilities on the operational end, finding the time to keep up with a blog can be regarded as a thorn in one’s side––just another mundane task that either the owner doesn’t have time for. The good news is that once I’m able to show them true and significant results of how blogging elevates sales, they are all ears.

In previous posts, I have offered valuable information on how to bootstrap your way through growing your small business. Blogging is one of the best ways to market your niche at little to no cost (time is money, and blogging takes time). Toss aside costly advertising campaigns and hit the keyboard running. In this post, I want to stress the importance of blogging, but kick it up a notch to guest blogging. It’s undeniable that in a saturated market, it’s harder than ever for brands to gain notice, but striking the right guest blog is like striking oil, or in marketer speak, rapidly expand your audience, subscribers, and fans generated from one spot.

By definition, guest blogging is a method used by marketers where one writes posts to be published on other blogger’s blogs to increase traffic back to their blog and/or website. It’s an active way to build authority in your industry (not just waiting for people to come across your blog passively). Guest blogging gets your blog noticed and makes an impact on your Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

Here are six reasons why guest blogging will take your small business to the next level:

1. Expands Your Reach

What you do, you do well, so why not write about it? Guest blogging expands your reach by spreading your knowledge into untapped areas of your target market. Odds are that you have captured an audience through your own blog/website and social media circles, but the opportunities that lie on the other side are endless! In doing your market research, if you spend enough time scrolling through blogs, you will be able to determine who the top authority figures are in your industry. These blogs rank high and for all the right reasons. They are honest, credible, and trustworthy and Google catches on to that. If these top dogs like what you have to say, it’s likely that they will promote your post. Guest blogging also expands your reach into a secondary market. Great guest posts can be shared in other industries. While not your target market, any exposure is great exposure.

2. Creates More Links

Guest posting on other sites is five times as valuable as creating new content on your own site. Guest blogging is great for gaining links back to your site, as long as you are doing it altruistically––meaning that you are offering valuable information for the masses, not just for getting links back to your site. It’s pretty obvious when people are writing just to get links. Google makes assiduous efforts at keeping spammers at bay, keep this in mind by keeping your audience’s interests at heart. When it comes to ranking higher in the search engine results, backlinks can accomplish this in a short period of time.

3. Creates More Readers

Guest blogging is a great way to bring more readers to your blog. Take for instance that you have written a really good post on a fellow blogger’s site and it catches the eye of another reader. They have clicked on it, which takes them to your blog. Now they’re focused on all your great content and they have left the other site entirely. If your blog has quality content, the new reader will be enticed to come back regularly for more great stuff, thus creating a loyal follower. If they like what they see, they will share it with their friends, bringing even more new readers to your site.

4. Converts Readers Into Customers

Writing amazing and engaging content will turn readers into customers. How? Simple. They now view you as an authority figure that cares about the industry and helps people to make valuable decisions. The definition of content marketing is the art of communicating with your customers and prospects without selling. It is non-interruption marketing. Instead of pitching your products or services, you are delivering information that makes your buyer more intelligent. The essence of this content strategy is the belief that if we, as businesses, deliver consistent, ongoing valuable information to buyers, they ultimately reward us with their business and loyalty.

5. Virtual Networking

Consider this your blogger outreach program where you build and foster relationships with other bloggers who have similar vested interests. Whereas creating mutual, organic social sharing and promotion of each other’s content is going to yield many more benefits than just blogging for yourself, the biggest key here is gaining exposure to other’s followers base. If they have a huge base, and you offer valuable content, now you have tapped a well of opportunities. When your guest posts gain a lot of attention, it is likely that they will be shared and retweeted, thus expanding your primary network.

6. Guest Post Offers on Your Blog

When you write valuable guest posts on other’s blogs, it opens up the opportunities for bloggers to return the favor by posting something great on your blog. Scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours. If you manage to land an opportunity to write for a superstar, just imagine the possibilities of them posting something on your blog! Also, keep in mind that once an industry leader accepts you, other leaders will stand up and take notice. It won’t be long before other industry gurus approach you to write for them! Who knows, maybe you’ve untapped an awesome skill for being a freelance writer––it just takes being in the right (virtual) place at the right time.
