 Steps To Writing A Book

The three steps I describe in this process seem simple but they are incredibly powerful. They are common sense strategies that our teachers tried to drill in to us but few of us actually took their advice. The steps include brainstorming, outlining, and then writing. I have discovered that it is the best way to write a book and the only way to write a book fast! If you have a book living inside of your that you need to write in a hurry then this is the process for you. I encourage you to read through the steps and then take immediate action.

Step 1: Brainstorm

In schools today they are called thinking maps or mind maps but if you are in your late 20s or older you might remember the term pre-write or “brainstorm” from your early education. I must admit when I was in school I hated brainstorming. I just wanted to pick up my pen and let it flow naturally to create my truly awesome work of written art. Now I understand the value of brainstorming when I tackle a big writing project like a book.

Brainstorming before you write will save you loads of frustration. If you want to complete your book in 30 days or less then this is the strategy for you. If you have ever attempted to write a book then you know how frustrating it is to have that blank, white screen glaring at you…almost taunting you. You may write 500 words, or even 5,500 but it’s like the screen somehow knows…you will NEVER finish.

You do not have to be tortured by a blank computer screen. Before you ever type your first word you need to take out a huge sheet of paper and a pencil and write your book topic in the middle, then circle it. Next, start writing down all of your thoughts related to your book topic (drawing lines connecting your thoughts to your topic). And repeat this process until you have organized chaos on paper. You want to purge all of your ideas about the topic out of your head and on to paper. Once you are out of thoughts about your topic you are done brainstorming and ready to move on to the next step.

 Step 2: Outline a Book

In step 2 you will turn your organized chaos in to more organization and less chaos. First you will review your brainstorm and identify any themes that emerge. Write down the emerging themes on a separate sheet of paper (or type them if you prefer). Organize your themes in a logical order as they would appear in your book. These emerging themes will become sections in your book.

Example:

A brainstorm about how to save money might produce the following themes/sections: (1) set goals, (2) earn more, (3) reduce expenses, (4) create a written budget, and (5) automate savings.

Now, under each section you will fill in your chapter titles using the additional thoughts found on your original brainstorm worksheet.

Example:

Section 1 – Set Goals
Chapter 1: It all starts here: Using goals as a roadmap to financial success
Chapter 2: How to set goals you can stick to

Section 2 – Earn More
Chapter 3: How to ask for the raise you deserve
Chapter 4: Step your side-hustle game up: How to earn more in your spare time

Section 3 – Reduce Expenses
Chapter 5: Scripts you can use to reduce your utility bills today
Chapter 6: How to cut your monthly grocery bill in half

 You get the point…

 Step 3: Write a Book

Now that you have your writing all planned out you should notice your confidence has increased. Instead of staring at a crippling blank screen you have a plan of action to begin working on. The next steps in this fool-proof process of writing a book in 30 days or less is the actual writing but before you dare face your computer screen again I want you to do a few things.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Download a monthly printable calendar and print it out (very important).
  2. Circle the date (30 days from now) that your rough draft is due and tell 3 people about your goal.
  3. Write down your words-per-day goal at the top of your calendar (use the guidelines 1 page =250 words, so if you want to write a 100 page book then that is 25,000 words and 25,000/30 =about an 833 words-per-day goal).
  4. Start a daily writing habit. Schedule writing time in your personal calendar. You know how fast you write so if you can hit your words-per-day goal in 2 hours of writing each day, then schedule 2 hours. Just be consistent!
  5. Have fun with the steps to writing a book.

If you follow the three simple but essential steps on how to write a book that I have outlined for you then I am confident that you will be able to call yourself an author in 30 days or less. The key to success in this process is to follow all of the steps…do not skip anything! Large jobs seem more achievable when we break them into bite-sized tasks and this is why this process works. The faster you begin the three step process and develop your daily writing habit, the quicker you will be celebrating your accomplishment.
