Yes, it was somewhat cost driven but I come from an investing and analysis background. Every cost is an investment if you understand the implications. Asset Values and Retirements
Ok, full disclosure I was also involved in asset valuations and retirements. I know that you probably have your computer on a useful life of 5 to 7 years and you don’t want to take the hit of retiring those assets which means you’ll have to write off sometimes a lot of money.

I mentioned this briefly earlier but security is a big big issue. It’s one that is hard to calculate because you aren’t being consistently attacked but if (or when) it happens then it can do a lot of damage. I come from the old world of manufacturing. Security on computers is kind of like safety for the manufacturing world. You sometimes can’t justify adding safety features to your factory because they are too expensive.
But if one of your employees gets hurt of worse then it can cost you a lot of money (not to mention the tragedy and pain of a real person).
Online security breaches may not physically harm you but they can do just as much damage. They can steal money or worse: personal information about you, your customers, and your employees.
