Why Your Next Laptop Shouldn’t be a Touchscreen Laptop?

touch screenI have been researching laptops for about 5 years now, and I can say that laptops are very different from what they used to be a mere decade ago. There were hardly any laptops with a touchscreen display in those days, if any at all, but now, each and every laptop manufacturer has at least one laptop in the market with a touchscreen display.

But, isn’t it surprising to know that the tech-giant Apple doesn’t have a touchscreen MacBook in its portfolio? When a representative from Apple Inc was asked about it, he said that the touchpad of MacBooks are so accurate that people will never even need a touchscreen display! And, he seems totally right too. So, the question arising here is, do you really need a touchscreen laptop? Is it really worth it? Let’s find out…

Before we start, I would like to say that;

The reasons given below for not buying a touchscreen laptop might be totally subjective for some people like graphic designers. For example, the touchscreen display is necessary to have more control over their design work. So if you are a designer, then this post might not be right for you to read on Blogtrepreneur today.

But, if you are a businessman, a college student or a housewife who is planning to buy a new laptop, then there are some solid reasons not to buy a touchscreen laptop. Before we start discussing them, answer my single question:

Touchscreen – What Would You Use it For?

As a normal day-to-day laptop user, what will you do with your touchscreen laptop? Do you really think that it will be beneficial to you in your everyday work? Do think twice on the aforementioned note!

Actually, you’ll never need a touchscreen laptop for making presentations and editing documents, surfing the web, checking email, etc. so buying one unnecessarily has many major cons, although there are some pros to it! We will discuss both the extremes here.

Let’s start with Pros first because I would really love to tell you how creative and productive you can be with your new touchscreen laptop.

Pros of Buying Touchscreen Laptop –

  • A laptop with a touchscreen display will come handy to play ‘Candy Crush’. Jokes apart! Having said that, it is an open fact that touchscreen laptops make it easy to play most of the games  available on the Windows store.
  • Moreover, If you use your laptop for graphics based applications such as CAD (Computer Aided Design) where designing with proper dimensions is really necessary then buying yourself a stylus will transform your ordinary touchscreen laptop into a designing-centric work machine.
  • The touchscreen on a laptop will gain you a better control in editing your images from your last vacation. That said, it makes it easy to apply any of the fancy filters and retouch faces through any of the available image editors .
  • Microsoft has foreseen the advent of touchscreen-based laptops and thus, have made their all the operating systems from Windows 8 compatible for both touch and non-touch-based laptops. Therefore, having a touchscreen laptop will gain you an upper hand in terms of productivity as well.

All the aforementioned aspects are some really good reasons to buy a touchscreen laptop. However, having a glance at the odds of having a touchscreen laptop might change your state of mind.

Moving ahead with the cons of buying a touchscreen laptop.

Cons of Buying a Touchscreen Laptop –

  • A touchscreen laptop has additional mechanisms within the screen to make it receptive to touch input. The same touch screen panel is stuffed with additional sensors, making the touchscreen laptops much heavier and thicker, affecting the ergonomics. And evidently, most touchscreen laptops aren’t as good as normal ones when it comes to portability.
  • Touchscreen display panels also consume battery power at a higher rate than that of normal displays and thus the touch-based laptops don’t stay juiced for a long period as the other normal laptops do.
  • Most importantly, this fancy feature in a laptop also affects our pocket deeply. That said, touchscreen laptops are usually priced higher than normal laptops. On the other hand, a better configured laptop can be chosen instead of this fancy touch feature.
  • A very common issue with the touch screen laptops is that they affect the viewing angles and brightness of the panel. I personally have come across many such issues with the users. Moreover, there is a whole thread on Quora regarding this issue.
  • Finally, some researchers have researched and found that using touchscreen enabled devices such as tablets and laptops can cause harm to the shoulders and back if not used properly. You can read more about it here.

On a conclusive note, the market is flooded with different laptop models which also include many of the touchscreen laptops. A decent touchscreen laptop with a lightweight body and a long battery life might be advantageous but most of us would not be able to afford it. Moreover, these touchscreen based laptops also bear an ill reputation for causing health issues, which is not a negligible aspect. So spending money on touchscreen laptop isn’t really beneficial unless you are a designer.
